Our mission is to safeguard the legacy of the historic Stamford Harbor Lighthouse by championing its restoration and preservation, while actively supporting the rehabilitation and protection of the submerged land and the vibrant wildlife that calls it home.
Saving a Piece of History
The Stamford Harbor Lighthouse is a significant piece of American maritime history that has been an important aid to navigation and a beacon of inspiration for over 140 years. Built in 1882 on Chatham Rock in Stamford Harbor, the lighthouse was erected to help guide ships safely into the harbor, known for its hazardous rocks and ledges. Stamford, CT was a bustling hub of ship traffic carrying a variety of goods for the local economy, and the lighthouse played a major role in the development of Stamford Harbor and the growth of the city.
The Stamford Harbor Lighthouse continues to operate and serves as a historic and iconic landmark, recognized by its inclusion on The National Register of Historic Places. The property has been privately owned for over four decades, and years of deferred maintenance have left it vulnerable to the elements and in desperate need of repair. Immediate action is needed to prevent the tragic loss of this historic beacon.
We need everyone’s help to achieve our goals and restore this neglected historic landmark. It is only through the effort and involvement of the local community that we will be successful. The time to save The Stamford Harbor Lighthouse has arrived.
Protect the Land & Wildlife
The Stamford Harbor Lighthouse is surrounded by 10 acres of submerged lands. In addition to restoring the lighthouse, we aim to rehabilitate the land surrounding it and protect the marine wildlife that calls it home. Our environmental initiatives will focus on several important focus areas:
